A Basket of Candles

by Heather
(South Jersey)

A basket of candles for the new wedded pair
In all different colors, for the two of you to share

The White ones burn first
They’re wrapped in white lace,
To celebrate the first Married night in your new chosen place.

The Mauve pair is taller and thinner
They are to burn when your first guest comes to dinner

The Navy Candles are for after your first fight
Use them to burn when making up all through the night.

There are Candles to burn Christmas Eve before Bed,
Your first holiday season now married,
That’s why they are Red.

Pink candles set the mood and pave the way
For your first married Valentine's Day.

Burn the Cream Anniversary Candles at the end of your first year,
To celebrate new memories you’ll forever hold dear.

Dark Green candles aflame, both your futures are bright
Celebrate promotions you've worked toward with all of your might.

At this time we hope, that maybe, just maybe
You can burn the Purple Pair, on the birth of your baby.

Your Fifth Anniversary will be a Special Day
To Cherish the good times you’ve had along the way
For this Occasion burn the Light Blue ONE
Not as a pair, but to signify your Union.

Now just one more pair left for the big “2” “5”
The Silver anniversary pair shows that you’ve kept your love alive.

Congratulations ____ and ____,
On the start of your forever
May the two of you always be happy together
Burn these Candles just the way I have said,
But please don’t forget
Blow them out before Bed!!

Love this poem
by: Sarah

I have used this poem at 3 showers and the bride always loves it. At the end I hand over a candle snuffer and say "snuff them out before bed". I buy a nice set of candle holders and put the white (wedding)ones in there while the rest of the poem is read. I continually have people asking for the poem to do at another shower.

I've never heard of this before but, it sounds like a nice tradition to start.
